Introductory Course Level I
We start learning Kana (Hiragana and Katakana), common expressions and example sentences. Reading and writing will be particularly stressed, and the student will be able to have basic conversations with friends outside the school. Pronunciation and listening also will be improved. The manual is: "Minna no Nihongo 1" (Japanese for everybody vol.1) and includes ordinary expressions and also some very simple kanji (5 characters per day).
Introductory Course Level II
This is the second step of the previous course: students will rub in what they learnt before and learn something new, such as potential forms, passive form, causal form and formal expressions. Verbal communication will improve fast, even because students will now be able to build up more complex sentences as well as subordinate clauses. The course ends with a beginner-level test (shokyuuinteishiken) which matches levels 3 and 4 of the international examination sponsored by Japan Foundation (Nihongo Noryoku Shiken). If successful, the students move to intermediate level. Some schools allow the students to move to upper level even if failed, and to take the test later on.
Intermediate Level I
In this course, students will study grammar structures, i.e., uses of particles and complex sentences. The purpose of this level is to refine conversation skills, while the student will be involved in debates with classmates and other activities. Kanji will be a little more complicated.
Intermediate Level II
Newspaper articles and Japan travel guides are commonly used as training aid. Some sociolinguistics, geographic and historical rudiments will be introduced by the teachers, while grammar, vocabulary, reading and writing will be of course part of the syllabus. The course ends with an intermediate-level test (chuukyuuinteishiken) which matches level 2 of the international examination sponsored by Japan Foundation (Nihongo Noryoku Shiken).
Upper Level I
This course is split into two paths, which the student can choose freely according to the preferred training course. It focuses on grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing and listening, that is, every subject they need to pass the examination. Consultation sessions with teachers will be organized, so that the students will have the opportunity to discuss their future career.
Upper Level II
The classes are separated according to the chosen path and the guidelines required by the students. Novels and newspapers are often used as teaching materials. The course ends with an upper-level test (joukyuuinteishiken) which matches level 1 of the international examination sponsored by Japan Foundation (Nihongo Noryoku Shiken)
